Annual Survey: High Percentage of US Consumers Take Dietary Supplements

A new survey funded by the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), a leading trade association for the dietary supplement industry, shows that supplements have remained widely popular among US consumers in 2014. Here are some of insights the survey revealed about dietary supplement consumers:

  • 68% of adults report regularly taking supplements; 95-98% of these adults use vitamins and minerals specifically. The use of vitamins and minerals is equally popular across all generations of supplement users.
  • The second-most popular category behind vitamins and minerals was specialty supplements. Herbs/botanicals and sports nutrition/weight management products were also somewhat popular.
  • 83% of respondents expressed confidence in the safety and effectiveness of supplements.
  • The number of women taking supplements decreased slightly between 2012 and 2014 (from 74% to 71%), but the number of men taking supplements increased over the same time period (from 62% to 65%).

The survey has been conducted annually since 2000. The CRN plans to release more details from the survey over the course of 2015.
